There are many erroneous beliefs surrounding sales.

Many entrepreneurs believe that ‘sales’ is a job to be relegated only to those who have specific sales skills and are employed to carry out this function (of course, this only applies to those who head organizations large enough to have employees designated to this role!). Some business owners believe that somehow selling is beneath them, perhaps hiding the fact that they are really terrified of actually making a sales pitch! (read ‘fearful of rejection’ and ‘anxious about making presentations’)

Salespeople themselves are frequently ill-informed and inadequately trained, falling prey to the more traditional sales models which rely on product and service knowledge as well as conscious mind sales methods and techniques, leaving them feeling burnt out and demotivated.

Developing a “sales success mindset” is not to be confused with positive thinking and a daily dose of affirmations every morning. Although not rocket science, establishing the right mind-set does require knowledge, skills and taking the requisite action!

So what makes up a successful sales mindset?

Firstly, we must recognize that our behaviours are closely tied to with the way we see ourselves (our self-image) and our beliefs about ourselves.

If you see yourself as a successful individual, you will tend to behave as successful people do and approach life and tasks with a ‘can do’ attitude, zeal and determination, maintaining a resourceful state in the face of all challenges to find meaningful solutions.

Note that it takes a great deal of effort to act contrary to your self-image and beliefs—and it usually ends in defeat.

Therefore, if you do not see yourself as a successful sales person, or you have limiting beliefs about your capability to be successful at sales, you will not engage in the sales behaviors that can make you and your company highly successful!

Secondly, in today’s world of neuro-science, which proves that human decision-making is a function of both conscious and non-conscious processes in the brain, it would be foolhardy for anyone aspiring to sales success, to not study how the unconscious mind influences buying decisions and the strategies one can use to reach beyond the conscious mind.

So, from an NLP perspective, sales success is not merely a series of steps that you take with automaticity or the product/service knowledge you need to sell to your client. That’s Sales 1.0. Much more is needed today to achieve record-breaking numbers, compete successfully or indeed be excellent in any area of human endeavor – it begins with changing your own mind-set then applying the latest neuroscientific research to reaching your clients (ethically of course) so that it becomes a real win-win for all concerned.
