How do you build your human capital? What a good question! I believe that human potential is THE MOST valuable resource and unfortunately, many place their focus (time, attention and money) on aspects outside of the SELF. Not that things like technology, equipment and infrastructure are not important, but in my view, these play a secondary role in building a successful business or creating wealth.
So how do you go about building your own human capital? Here are three keys to get you on our way.
The first action point is to accept your own intrinsic value as an individual! Many persons go through life feeling ‘less than’ or ‘not enough’ and this factor alone makes it nearly impossible to reach the heights of your potential. Your value is NOT determined by your job, family, friends or business. It is God-Given and you were born with it – it is part of your IDENTITY! Often persons grow up with misconceived notions of themselves and, unless these are eliminated, they remain and infect our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, ensuring that the results we get are also, ‘less than’. So, if you have anything like this swirling around (or perhaps buried in your unconscious mind) then its time to acknowledge it and do something about getting rid of it!
Secondly, and closely linked with the first step, is to specifically identify your strengths, talents, purpose and passion, and where these intersect with market needs. This is your ‘diamond dust’, which, if you mine, will lead you to the ‘diamonds’! This is your intrinsic value which you can expand and hone through further training, coaching and developmental activities.
Focusing on what you are good at and enjoy will ensure greater levels of flow, productivity trust and revenue within your team and organization. Understanding your own Wealth or Talent profile is an important step in that direction. There are lots of profiling systems out there, but I highly recommend Wealth & Talent Dynamics developed by global entrepreneur and futurist, Roger James Hamilton, because of its focus on your strengths and how best to use them in either a business or organizational context. And, if you are a leader already, once you find your own personal flow, help others to do the same – this will impact every aspect of your business. Often, particularly when we are starting out with our own venture, we take on ALL the roles and responsibilities of operating and managing. While this may be necessary at the outset, practically speaking, for you to progress, you need to find a team or partners to work with you and to take on the tasks that are not within your strengths and talent pool.
The first of my own business values is ‘collaborate’ – when we do this wisely, it frees us to maximize our own potential and value creation while we carefully select and position our team members or partners to unleash their own.
Finally, design a vision and purpose statement for yourself. Businesses and Organizations often go to great lengths to develop vision and mission statements to give direction to the team, but as individuals not many of us see the benefits of doing this exercise on a personal level. Your unconscious mind, like the team, needs guidance to help you sort for opportunities to help you get to your desired goal.
Once you are inspired by a vision of a future which excites and motivates you, then, when you are truly connected with it, establish your goal and a milestone framework to help you monitor your progress and get you there!
